After days of frustration dealing with crashes, I decided to run a system restore using the discs that came with the computer. The computer runs Windows XP. I'm left with the message "NTLDR is missing.". I'm wondering If I could run a Windows 8 installation instead of my old restore software, even with this NTLDR missing message. It seems like a good time to update.
a b * Windows 8

As long as you are using the System builder (OEM) version you can install Windows 8. If you only have the upgrade you will need get an earlier version of Windows installed first.

An upgrade disc can be used to perform clean install too...
just chose custom install when asked in the process of installation
