Because of recent moves, I need to get a decent laptop so my main workstation doesn't become inflicted with "death by transportation". I'll still transport the workstation back and forth between home and the practice space for serious recording, but I don't want to do it once or twice a week. I was really hoping on getting something cheaper and less powerful later on just for the stage, but the need for one that will do more has become apparent.
The main purpose is audio and MIDI playback and creation. I will be running Cakewalk Sonar 2, Fruity Loops, Sound Forge, and various realtime effect, software synths and/or samplers. I will not be recording with it per se, but I may have to in a pinch, and will need to output multiple streams. Exact configuration is open as long as I can meet certain requirements with PC cards. Also, a Mac is out of the question because Sonar is not ported to it and I really don't feel like rewriting every song into a VST or Logic format, along with having to buy both Mac and PC versions of the software. What I need is (these are minimums):
1.8Gb/1800+ CPU
256MB Memory (512 prefered)
20Gb HDD
Firewire (for audio interface)
USB 1.1 (for MIDI interface)
NIC
CD-ROM
Win2K (prefer not to use XP, can't use 9x/ME because of Firewire)
A modem would be nice, but I could live without it. The same goes for a CDRW, as we can easily just throw rough mixes on cassette. Also, because of the ugency, I am on somewhat of a tight budget, though I haven't sat down to figure out what I can actually afford yet. Thanks guys.
