Hi folks. I'm making the BIG JUMP from PRoTools 3.1 to 5.0 (don't
laugh, this is HUGE for me). i love PTools, and finally wanted to be
able to control my effects now that i'm collabing with others on
SongRamp.

My situation is: when recording in PT 5, even with the effects turned
OFF, my voice still sounds echo-y and reverbed - very distracting to
sing to while i'm hearing so much in my headphones. I checked my
Sound/Monitor, and turned the sound input from External Mic to RCA In,
and it sounds as it should. But the moment I go into the PTools
screen, and hit REC on a track, i get the reverbed sound.

I looked at Buffer size - thought that might make a difference, but it
doesn't seem like that much difference.

I plug my mic into my 4 track Tascam, as that's connected to my Alesis
effects board, then the 4 track is connected to my G3 System 8.6 with
RCA plugs.

What am I doing wrong?
Any help here appreciated,
Anne

Echoey and reverbed... Are you hearing reverb, or is it a slap-echo from a
delay? Or a flanging effect? Given the conditions under which you hear the
problem, I'll hazard a guess that you might be hearing both direct sound
from your mic, and sound after it went through PT. Audio going through an
A-D and then D-A conversion adds a slight bit of latency to the audio; going
through Pro Tools software it adds even more. I don't remember what menu
it's under in PT5, but you should change "Input-Only Monitor" to "Auto-Input
Monitor"... I think. Either that, or simply mute the Pro Tools return on
your Tascam mixer.

This is the best I can suggest without more information, such as detailed
info on your interface, PT version (LE? Free? TDM?), how you monitor your
mixes, etc.

Hope this helps!

You are hearing the signal from your mixer input AND the signal recorded in
ProTools that is then sent out to your mixer. The delay is the latency of
the A/D and D/A of the hardware interface.
If I am not mistaken(someone will correct me, I'm sure), you can just mute
the channel in ProTools. It should still record, but you won't hear that end
of it.

Guessing...check to see if you are in Low Latency MODE. If you aren't, the
delay you're hearing can be a bit weird. You won't here it upon playback.
Only during record.
