I work for a local Pittsburgh OfficeMax and we have some "Cendyne" 48x12x48 cd burners for sale... Turns out they are LITE-ONs!!! and better yet, some of them are actually the 48x24x48!!! I snagged one up and it is no joke. Not sure about the rest of the country but maybe check it out, here we have them on sale for $60 - $30 mail in rebate... so $30 for a lite-on 48x burner!!! Just look on the back of the box for the model number (it is the Cendyne "lightning" series burners)... For those of you who don't know the model numbers should be as follows:

LTR-48246S (48x24x48)
LTR-48125W (48x12x48)

I was so happy to find this out just thought I need to share. Take care!

I knew Cendynes are rebadged Lite-ons, at least the Lightning series since 24x10x40x days are but I didn't know about mismarked 48x24x48x burners.

Thanks!!!!

Happens...often the no name companies actually supply bigger companies, and they sell it w/ their brand name. Obviously going for the supplier costs a lot less.

*UPDATE*

We got a second shipment of the SAME DRIVES IN THE SAME PACKAGING that were in fact GENERIC "Cendyne" 48x12x50 drives... Again be sure to check models numbers on the back of the drive...

LTR-48246S Lite-On 48x24x48
LTR-48125W Lite-On 48x12x48
48x12x50 Cendyne POS 48x12x50

and like i said, these are packaged in the box for the Cendyne Lightning IV 48x12x48 box... regardless of the fact that some are 48x24... gotta love insider info :)

Actually the 48x12x50 Cendyne is an Aopen.

When I first got it the drive would spin up to read a cd and even after reading would continue to whirl furiously, making a lot of noise. I just upgraded the firmware and will report back on whether this has been fixed.

are you sure? because the ones we have at work say Cendyne right on the drive... nothing about Aopen. i opened the box to be sure.

Too bad I didn't look around too much when I bought my 16X TDK writer from Best Buy. Still, it's been nice and reliable for me so far....it's just not 48X :frown:

A lot of the packagers (Cendyne, PacDig, Memorex, Verbatim, Polaroid etc.) are using LiteOns. Also the latest TDK and Sony are rebadged LiteOns. They're everywhere! They're everywhere!
. I never buy packager's stuff unless I know what's in the box. And beware of getting Acer/Benq or BTC in the box, those are junk. AOpen drives are OK, look for JustLink buffer underrun protection to be sure of AOpen - Acer/Benq uses something else.

NOT ALWAYS THE CASE!!!! I bought a Cendyne Lightning 48x12x48 at Officemax. The outside of the box gave a LiteOn part # (LTR...) When I got it home, the CD itself said 48x12x50, so i thought cool...First thing I do when I install is check for new firmware. Went first to Cendyne site, sure enuf there was a firmware update for my model #. After d/l the update...it won't install...says its not the right model. After further checking, i found out it is actually an AOPEN drive!!! Cendyne was placing AOPEN drives in boxes with Lite-On part #s. RRRRRR....I went to the firmware they have for AOPEN drive (48/12/50) and presto, installs w no problemo... RRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

Aargh! I was sure that Cendyne was always a rebadged Liteon (Lightning III and later that is) now I know it's not always the case.

Thanks for the info.

LOL bones you got shafted :)

all of the ones at the OMAX I work for were correct when they said LTR-48246s... altough ever since october/november they have gone back to a different generic company. i think some of us just got lucky during the holiday season.

NOTE however that ALL of the Cendyne 52x24x52 drives are Lite-Ons. atleast here in Pittsburgh they are.

I just bought the cendyne 48x12x48 lightning IV cd-rw. I opened it up and the drive was a 48x16x48. However the drive model was not a Lite-Ons. Mine said 4816P. is it a lite-ons? one problem though, easy cd creator can't recognize the drive as a cd writer. I need firmware update but I can't find it in cendyne.com I found the update 48x12x48 but it says that it is for lite-on only.

nope not a lite-on :frown: try www.cdfreaks.com or www.cdrlabs.com to find firmwares etc. Also it sounds to me like sleazy-CD Cremator is the problem in that is does not recognize the drive update it or dump it entirely and get a copy of Nero

oh my god, my cendyne lightning IV 48x12x48 cd writer that I bought from officemax explode. my diablo 2 expansion cd was totally destroyed along with it. what ever you do don't buy that cd writer, it can damage your system. Now I just need a fast quiet cd writer that won't explode.

correction, the cd in the drive exploded, not the drive itself.

unfortunately this is allways a possibility in the era of high speed drives. was your Diablo CD scratched or nicked at all?
