My son works in networking , he tells me thay got a way to send fast internet over the powerlines and they are testing it out in Pilly ( may be wrong on area ). Started out with 60000 homes and now up to 600000 . I am really interested as i live in a area that cannot get cable or dsl . I have sat. internet and it leaves a lot to be desired . He also says that if you get 3 download you get 3 upload . Has anyone heard about this . If it works out and tests good i will be so interested in it . Boy o boy o boy .

RC he says that you get 3 gigs ( or whatever the terminalogy is ) for around $40.00 / month . That may go up as they release ? Thats about a third of what i pay for satalite . Please write your congressman and tell em i want it ha ha ha ha .

Trouble is all the laws & such from when they electrified the country. That allowed a lot of utilities to control things, to this day. They have us over a barrel on things. I'm not sure how they're going to cut through it. Right now, there's no need for a home phone, connected to a land line. However it's going to be years before people wise up to it.
When I was in Mexico for 6 months, I saw it first hand. The only phone your going to get in Mexico is a cell. They're not going to stop the graft & corruption to give any thing to anyone down there. They have far superior cell tech. Than we do & it's dirt cheap.
No, here in the US, we're screwed into how it's always been done to keep the utilities happy!!

Don't know the terminology DH , say 3 gigs . What the deal is though you get the same upload as you do the download which is interesting .
are we talking bandwidth here? or upload/download limits to datatransfer?
The prob with (a)dsl is that you get used to pretty fast download speeds but sending out a lot of data (large emails, serving an internet game) is still relatively slow. For me it would be better if I just got a big bandwidth that can be used for whatever purpose (up or down).

That seems to be a European thing, Canada as well. I don't see limits here in the US. Some 56K's have a limit, but DSL & Broadband for the most part is unlimited... It's $50 a month on avrage also...
Yea, we're spoiled!!!!

yeah, we pay around that now (apart from crap isp's like AOL who think people are stupid enough to pay £29.99 a month for it). I pay 19.95 (around $50) a month.

Price War would be nice, but its still a few years away from that happening, the technology has already been tested and is currently being used in some other countries, I don't really know why we are the last to finally get it.
Unless its a security issue, after 9/11, being able to keep some genius hacker from shutting down the entire power grid in the US, so in that respect only, it may not be such a great idea for our country after all.
We need some competition in the ISP's & Cable TV. In my town the city council approves rate increases for my cable. I've had Millennium Digital, then ATT, now Comcast. These companies are reaping huge benefits on something, or I wouldn't have my service being bought & sold like I change shoes. I can still only use what's approved here & that's it. Service sucks form all of them.
Don't pay your bill on time, they'll show up on Sun. AM to either collect or they shut you off. Call & ask for service & 1 to 1 1/2 months for someone to come out & say everything is just fine. Complain more & they flat out ask you if you want to discontinue it. That's some real class service IMO!!!!
So much for allowing competition.
In MI, Detroit is about the only place you have a choice.

Yep Ryan thats it . I want it NOW ha ha ha . I am quite sure they would not allow it if it could shut down a power grid . The boy says there testing it now in ( i think he said Pilly ) and getting ready to release before long if everything works ok . Thinks for the link and right your congressman telling him that IronMike wants it NOW ha ha ha . O boy o boy o boy , maybe i can see some light poking out the end of the tunnel .

depends on what you pay for your connection. I have no data limit on my connection whatsoever.

When this is fully implemented any home with electrical power will be able to have high speed internet service, man these are exciting times we live in aren't they, look at the technological changes made in just the last 5 years, we're not looking at an addition factor but more of a multiplication factor, can you imagine the next 5 years.
The reason I mentioned the security part was from an article I read on the subject, that claimed the power companies were excited about the possibilities themselves, because it would give them the capability to remotely control far reached sub control stations, that today if they had a problem there, they would have to send someone out to those areas, but this capability would allow them to remotely control the majority of those situations.
So definite strong security measures will have to be implemented to ensure some hacker couldn't access those control stations, thats for sure!

i'm not sure where it was, but i remember i saw a kit for home networing that used the same idea. the data would be sent through the recipticals! i'm sure you can find this kit if you look for it.
Non, j'ai cable pour la television, pas l'oridinateur.
