The tube should be internally matched within 5%.
The 6 or so examples I've heard of an NTK or K2 with different tube has
demonstrated that the improvement directly reflects the improvements found
with audiophile equipment. In other words, you can take an audiophile's
recommendation on what to expect. Just make sure it's not a guitar amp
recommendation. For example current production Svetlana tubes are very good
value for guitar amps, but do not do hifi or studio gear any justice.
I would not recommend any new production tube for studio applications.
There is too much demand for cheap tubes for cheap starved plate ART
TubeMP's etc, so no OEM can charge enough to adequately cover the costs of
producing quality tubes. I'm told a major contributor to the inferior
performance of current production tubes is the use of recycled metals of
lesser purity and non-uniform temperment and density, which alone is plenty
to cripple a tube otherwise built to the highest standards.
Something I haven't heard yet is the use of a more colored tube like a 12AX7
for an alternate flavor. I've swapped a 12AX7 for a 12AY7/6072 in a Classic
II before, and that was pretty wild, certainly something I wouldn't ever
expect to use on voice. I didn't get to play with it enough to discern a
pattern of behaviour, but what came to mind was to try it on kick drum,
where I've had good results with a CAD M9, but is something a little
hazardous for a $1300 condenser. At my next opportunity I want to pop a
12AX7 into an Apex 450 and play around with the polar pattern in an
elongated kick. I suspect that one notch up from the fig-8 position should
be very interesting, and I can always call Shanghai for a replacement
capsule...

The Rode glossy makes a lot of noise about their fancy old valve
characteristic tester, for what that's worth .....
The Sovtek 6922 can be a excellent sounding tube. I've never heard a
6DJ8 that sounds worth a damm. If the Roads has the space and
fillament overhead for a 6FQ7 (very unlikely), that would be worth a
listen.
