We're making a few changes in the format of our LCD screen articles. Let's begin with the good news, there'll be more comparison tests and more screens tested this year. The aim is to achieve one comparison test per month.
Huzzah!

This should be good THG already produces the most thorough LCD monitor reviews on the net. I eagerly await for the next set of LCD reviews.

Oh please dont forget to review some 15" LCD monitors as well during 2004, because they are still there, and they are now so cheap that you cannot deny they represent the best opportunity for a poor new buyer of a new LCD monitor, and whatever, 15" of an LCD is as much big as a 17" of a CRT screen, so, please dont leave them.
Which one of the 15" is the best in 2004 ?
Thanks.

Will you review the 172x with the acctual response times? Cause im pretty much stuck without a screen now and this would probably clear up weather to get the q17 or 172x. either way, when should we expect the next review?

kopykat, don't be so cruel with me :).
I can't answer everybody in the same time + English is not my first language + I receive almost 200 mails per day with the same number of questions about LCD displays + I have to work also.
So please excuse me to answer "so late".
Let's be friends now :)

Of course, I want to test the "new" 172X.
But let me explain it's real story...

We tested the 172X 16 ms and wrote, as you've read it, that it was not a good display for gaming.
Samsung took our review very seriously and decided to stop it's production (they wanted to launch this display in November but cancelled it), waiting for a new generation of panels with a new response time, 12 ms instead of 16 ms. This new 172X is coming right now.
I'm waiting for it. I should have a new unit al least in April.
It should be published in a new review in April or May.

sure, we can be friends :) . i was in a rush cause i wanted to decide weather or not to purchase the 172x. but according to what ur saying all the 172x models out in shops now are 16ms and not the 12ms we've all been waiting for, is this correct?

Ooh, that makes me so angry . . . why don't they just give it a different name? Like 172X could be the 25ms version, 172Y could be the 16ms version, and 172Z could be the 12ms version. Isn't there some kind of law about misleading consumers this way?

And you just can't get any truth when it comes to monitor reviews outside of THG. It really bothers me. Most online mags are like, "Dell 1901fp is the best ever! It's easy to use and its slick design will compliment your office furniture nicely! 10 out of 10!" It seems like nobody cares about what's in the actual hardware, and the manufacturers are more than happy to take advantage of this. Ok, rant over.

So the review is out . . . sort of anticlimactic. It looks like the 193p wins, but someone in these forums who owns one (jincuteguy I think) said that it still has ghosting issues, which makes me sad.

Well, there's always next month.

You missed a line, it's half in french: http://www.tomshardware.com/display/20040326/lcd-03.html

On the LCD1960NX review "Both monitors offer roughly the same level of features, while the Globalement, ces deux moniteurs ont les mêmes avantages et défauts, avec un avantage tout de même pour celui de Hercules offers a slightly better performance. .Overall, both monitors have the same assets and failings, though with an advantage to the Hercules."

I think the review was good. I'm just disappointed that the holy grail of LCD screens is not out yet.

For ME that's a 19 or 20" LCD, silver/aluminum in color with good built in speakers, fast response time (good gaming), accurate color reproduction, DVI input and great looks.

Dreaming maybe. I wish the articles by Tom would do a little more forcasting on what the future holds. Some rumors and hopes for us dreamers out there.

dont get me wrong, im not saying Toms did a bad article. its just if you browse through these message boards youll find alot of interest in what monitor people should get for gaming, 2d and so on. No matter what size thier looking for. I went to purchase the Hercules 920pro dvi recomended by Tom to be the greatest for gaming so far and wasnt able to find any available. Now theyve discontinued them. So whats the next best thing out there? thats all I'm askin.

I think good LCD reviews would be:

1. Samsung 173P vs 193P
2. 172X
3. Some widescreen LCDs

I definitely think Tom's Hardware Guide give the best, in-depth review of LCDs though! Thumbs up!

Shame about the 193P being too slow for gaming :(
