I've got a Creative Ensonique PCI audio card. Would it be worth getting a new card? I've only got a simple Altec Lansing system w/2 speakers + sub. I'm not talking expensive cards like the Audigy here, just a $40 card or something. For typical gaming/Windows use would it really make any difference? I'm clueless about this so any expert advice is welcome.

It depends, would you like to have Dolby Digital 5.1 sound? Even though you do not have 6 speakers it would still sound better then what you have, you could pick up Sound Blaster 5.1 at newegg for about $35.00. If you do not play games where sound is not that important, then stick with what you have. A center channel speaker can make a big difference in 5.1 format, plus if you watch TV/movies on you computer the central channel makes a difference.

I cant believe someone recommended a SB 5.1 .......

Yes, it would make some difference even on less expensive speakers. You might try a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or a Phillis Sonic Fury, both are available for 60 dollars or less and are great cards

Windows is like a house of cards... One wrong move and it all comes crashing down.
