I am unsure of which stick of corsair 512mb pc3200 xms to buy. Some come with a platinum/silver heat spreader which is more expensive than the ones with the aluminum. I plan to do some overclocking so will I notice a difference? Does a heat spreader even help?

A HSF will obviously keep the RAM cooler. But the benefits of a platinum/silver alloy compared to allumium is, judging by the thermal properties of those materials, so small that it doesnt warrant the increased price. Unless you have the cash, or want to do some serious overclocking that pushes the RAM to its limit, I suggest you forget about the platinum/silver heatsink.

I'm going to give you a hint but... shhhhhh, don't tell anyone.

The platinum heatspreader is just Corsair, as a company, cashing in on the fact that people like to make their computers "pretty" these days.
