At AES, Schoeps' Jurg Wuttke and Christian Langen came by to show us
their new digital microphone, and to test it with our PDAudio handheld
24/96 digital audio recorder.

The folks at Schoeps have been working on the committee that's
finalizing the AES's digital microphone interface standard (AES 42-2001
Standard for Acoustic-Digital Interface for Microphones). Their digital
mic uses their standard range of capsules, and looks and sounds just
like their other mics. The main difference is that instead of putting
out an analog mic-level signal, it outputs a digital audio signal
(AES/EBU or S/PDIF, selectable internally). It runs on a very small
9-volt battery power supply and without an external mic pre or A-to-D,
offers over 120 dB of dynamic range (even without using gain range
switching). It sounds quite wonderful!

We plugged the digital mic into one of our PDAudio recorders, in this
case an HP iPAQ h2215 with our PDAudio-CF card in its CF slot and a
flash memory card in the other. This version of PDAudio can literally
fit in your shirt pocket with room to spare and costs under $500. We
hit "record" and sure enough, we were able to record at 24/96.

This combination would make a really excellent sounding and very compact
field recorder for electronic news gathering and concert recording.

Very cool. But also pretty expensive still. Cheap recorder, expensive
mic and media. Sounds like inkjet printers. <g>
