Printer to pc via ethernet cable only

With just a printer and an ethernet cable, can this be used to print without internet, modem, etc. just like using an USB to printer?

in theory yes but it really depends on the programmability of the printer

but you most likely need a crossover network cable

Thanks for your reply. I have a very nice HP color laser printer. It is already connected to two computers via a switcher. There is an ethernet opening on the back. I was hoping to use that to occasionally print using my laptop. I was hoping to not have to use my home network. It this possible? You indicated that perhaps it is and I would need a crossover network cable. Would you elaborate a bit more. Thanks!
