I recently upgraded my ISP service speed to 18 MB down/3 MB up. When i perform a wired test to the modem, i get 19MB/2.7MB. But when i test thru my WNDR3700 wirelessly i get 10/1 (comp testing is on 2.4 gHz band). I have WEP for my 2.4 Ghz band and WPA2 AES for my 5 Ghz band. I've tried going to WPA2 AES on 2.4 band but had serious problems with connecting devices (WD Live Tv, Ipad, Iphones, etc..)

How fast does it run with no encryption. WEP can be cracked in a couple of seconds by the dumbest kid on the street so its as good as nothing.

I suspect you will have the same slowness on 2.4 with no encryption. You more than likely have a interference issue and it is the standard change the channel, move the device etc etc to fix it. Your problem could also be if you are running a mix of G and worse B devices with your N stuff, many routers slow down a lot switching back and forth. It may be as simple as you are limited to 54m when you do not run wpa2 and aes

Stupid mistakes. Had QOS upload limited to 1 Mbs. Also didn't know son was on upstairs when running wifi test, hence bogging down the download. 17/2.75 with no one on (so to speak). As for WEP being easy to hack, well I check attached devices regularly. I have more leakage (data use) from comps with programs running auto updates than some kid on the street sluffing off my network. I have the 2.4 running at 54Mbs to reduce range. I would love to run WPA2 AES on the 2.4 band, but it is clitchy when connecting devices to it and i have playback issues when steaming video from the NAS.

Glad you got it fixed. On WEP just remember someone who is going to crack it is not just there to play around. They will if you are lucky just run bit torrent and you will get cease and desist letters from your ISP and maybe a small court action from the RIAA. If you get unlucky the government will come in and seize every device you have until they decide you are not guiltily of posting child porn or making terrorist threats against the government.
