I would like to output my pc desktop to the Yamaha rx-v596.

My IN options for video are: Coax digital, optical digital, s-video, and rca.
My IN options for sound are: Analog RCA, coax and optical digital signals.

My computer is kept approximately 70 feet from the tv area. What component is right for me? I would like to be able to access my mp3 files as well as view pics, etcetera from the tv room. I would like a screen resolution of 1024x768 -- i think?

How far can s-video signals be sent w/o problems?

I would also like to be able to control the desktop from the tv room. Are there any remotes that will let me do this?

What will it cost to do this?

I have looked at the audiotron and think it is cool, but i want the further convenience of having a large video display of the music i'm interested in hearing.

Please help... I'm very frustrated.

A product which I just learned of (so I don't know much about it) is ATI's Remote Wonder. It's a Radio Frequency remote so unlike typical remote controls it works through walls. It comunicates with your computer via a receiver that connects to your computer's USB ports. Here's a link.

Here's one review.

As for your cabling requirements, you probably want a 5.1 audio connection, either Coax or Optical, to your home theater system. I think most video cards only offer RCA or or S-Video for video out. Either of these can work long runs and are pretty cheap. If your TV has SVGA input you could also use an SVGA extension cable but you'll need a booster or a spitter/booster and the cable is unwieldy and expensive. I'd go with S-Video, myself. Pretty good quality and you don't need to buy super esoteric cables.

Besides the cables I think all you need is a sound card capable of Digital 5.1 sound output, a video card with S-Video Out, and the ATI Remote Wonder plus any desired PC software.

99% is great, unless you are talking about system stability

If you are looking for a card that will do all of that for you, I recommend any of the ATI All In Wonder cards. If you like to play games, buy the 8500 AIW DV, or the 9700 AIW Pro. If Games are not that important to you, nor the firewire, but you still want the remote, get the 7500 version, as it is cheaper. Overall, I believe that the 8500 DV is the best value for performance and function right now as it is only $20-40 dollars more than the 7500, and because it is almost half the price of the 9700 Pro, which just came out.

If it works for you then don't fix it.
