Forum CPU & Components : Other Components i've got a quick network card question

Word : Username :

I have DSL internet access. The card I use to connect to the router is the "SMC EtherEZ (8416)" network adapter card. It's a few years old.

What I want to know is whether or not I should drop a few $$ into a new card. Would I see any improvements in connection speed to the 'net / online gaming?

Any suggestions on what card to get? Thanks as always for your knowledgeable advice.

You will not likely notice any difference.

You have a high quality network card. Unless you drop a reasonable amount of money on another high quality card, such as a 3com or Intel card, your system will probably run a little SLOWER on the new card, due to the fact that cheap cards use software instead of hardware to accomplish some task.

I'm on a 10/100 connection, but never see a transfer rate higher than 10Mbits over the internet, I have a feeling if you test your connection you'll find a similar reason NOT to upgrade.

Alright, thanks for your info.

I was just curious about it since Counterstrike runs like crap when trying to get server info, and my latency is surprisingly poor. I guess it's because my system blows. My roommate's PC is a P4 1.3 and runs fine for that game, with fast server info collection and about half the latency.

Wow, I got a working 3Com NIC card today at a computer liquidation sale, £2 it cost me and im guessing its pretty good (3Com 100/10mbit Ethernet card). I dont need it but it was a bargain :-) Im going back later on to get a base system with a dual slot mobo, should be fun making that up.

Go to http://www.dslreports.com and look under 'Our Tools' for a tweak tool. That will recommend some network settings to get the max out of your connection.

My CPU runs so hot the arctic silver undergoes nuclear fusion  .

Useful site. Thanks for the link. It told me my connection was excellent so no need to alter settings.
