With zero intensions to overclock, which brand name/type RAM is the best to be used with the Asus A7N8X mobo (budget is somewhat of an issue, but this computer must also last as long as possible)?

Corsair 256MB XMS PC2700 CAS 2 DDR w/ Heatspreader $ 179.00

Kingston 256MB PC2700 DDR CAS2.5 $ 129.95

these are the main choices (because of availablity to me), so which would be better, and why?

The more expensive one has better latency and is therefore faster. (2ms vs 2.5ms) However I think you'd be perfectly fine with the cheaper ram. I mean your dealing with too of the top 5 ram companies in the world so you can't go wrong.

Let's see if you're right about Cas2 being 2ms for DDR333. Well, DDR333 runs on a 166.67MHz bus. Now, that's 1000/166.67 is 6ns Double that for Cas2, it's 12ns. Multiply by 2.5 for Cas2.5 and it's 15ns. So it takes Cas2.5 3ns longer to initiate memory transfer.

In real life performance it's around 1-3% average performance difference. On SDRAM I've seen the difference in performance between Cas2 and Cas3 go from 0% to 7% depending on the application.

Anyway, I'd say that unless a person is looking for the BEST performance, cas 2.5 is probably good enough, considering the price difference.
