Can't play audio cd's

I can't hear my audio cd's when I play them in my mitsumi 4804 TE burner. I can hear all my system sounds, can play mp3's both off the HD and a CD and I can hear a movie off a disc. I just can't get any sound off an audio disk. And both winamp and media player freeze when I try to play an audio cd. I can rip mp3's from an audio cd, and I can install stuff off a cd. I have checked the cable going from the cd player to the sound card and that looks fine. Even bought a new one. I have checked the mixer to make sure the cd isn't muted. I have installed the latest drivers. I can't figure it out. I think it might be something inside windows XP somewhere. Can anyone help me.

You said you checked THE cable. There should be two, a really wide flat one, and a small one. If you only have the wide flat one, that would be the problem. The small one is for the decoded audio, without it you won't be able to listen to CD's directly.

I suppose you have already enabled DAE for the Mitsumi and play your CDs that way? If not try it, you can enable it by going to the properties page for your drive in 'Device Manager' and checking the box for 'Enable digital CD audio for this device'...

You don't need the audio cables with an ACPI HAL in Win2K and WinXP, if you do as r2k mentioned.

I didn't know that. One small step for man, one giant step for mankind.

I thought that setting was for the SPDIF stuff. Sorry for posting the inaccuracies.

So now, is all the data passed through the PCI bus from IDE controller to sound card? It seems like in some ways this could also be a step backward. Specifically the extra cloggging of a relatively bandwidth limited PCI bus. But hey at least there is no need to rely on CD drive DACs anymore. Yay.

PS how does one check the ACPI HAL status, necessary for setting this up? Sorry big NT newbie here? I am actually only about 2 weeks old now, straight outa '98SE.
Edited by knewton on 12/15/02 09:51 AM.

You can either look in the BIOS, or in the Device Manager for this kind of information. In the Device Manager, this should be listed under System Devices.

Most BIOS versions come with ACPI set as the default, and this is the preference for Win2K/XP. If you had the system set to run as APM, you would have had to manually select a Standard PC HAL during the beginning of the OS installation (as well as the BIOS, on some mainboards) ... and if this wasn't done, you are running an ACPI HAL.

More?

You're correct, of course. During heavy disk activity, CD music playback can crackle a lot. The solution is to use the SPDIF Digital Out on your drive. This way you don't have to deal with the cheap DAC on the drive and you get the music transferred to your sound card with no PCI overhead.
