I have an Athlon XP 2400 and an Abit KD7 Motherboard. I bought a 300W PSU and it starts up my pc, and then dies. Is 300W not powerful enough? I also have 2x Hard Drives and 2x CD Drives but they aren't plugged in when i boot up, so will a 300W not work or do i need a 400W? Can i use any PSU for my system? some say "designed for Pentium 4" so does that mean it wont work with an AMD? I was thinking of getting a Q-Tec 400W would that work?

Thanks

It depends on the quality of the power supply you have, but this problem doesn't sound like it's lack of power. How far does the system get before it dies? It may be that there's a short in your system somehwere (motherboard shorting out on a part of the case maybe?). I'd try unplugging everything but for one memory stick, processor, and video card, and see what happens. Try disableing unused onboard devices as well if you can. Even cheap "300W" PSU's should be able to get your system past POST with only these items plugged in, unless there's something seriously wrong with it. If you want to check if the PSU's decent you need to check the label on the side of the PSU to see what it's total combined output rating is. If it's 300Watts, then that should be enough to support your system with at least one hard drive and one CD-ROM. If you plan on running your hard drives in a RAID configuration and you're plugging in lots of external USB devices then a bigger PSU wouldn't hurt. Designed for Pentium 4 means that it has the extra ATX12V Connector on it used for Pentium 4 motherboards, but they should still work for your system. As far as how good the PSU you mentioned is I psersonally haven't heard of them, so I can't comment. But anything from Enermax, Coolermaster, Antec, Seventeam, Super Flower, Thermaltake, and any of those other brand name PSU I forgot to mention here should be fine.

One more thing, although <A HREF="http://www.abit.com.tw/abitweb/webjsp/english/faq_letter.jsp?pDate=2002/01/30&pQUESTION=My+system+won't+power+on+unless+I+unplug+and+plug+back+in+the+power+supply.++What+can+I+do?+(KT7)" target="_new">this</A> article from Abit's online FAQ doesn't describe the problem exactly, it's also worth a try.

My friend have a 300 watt PSU cannot even boot a Duron 600 but worked fine with his old P3 system. After changing the PSU his new system works fine.

It could be that the problem is caused by some part shorting out. But if you decide to buy another PSU after checking I recommend atleast a 350W for your setup. I personally never heard about the Q-Tec one.

My CPU runs so hot the arctic silver undergoes nuclear fusion  .
