hi i currently own a sb audigy card with a cambridge soundworks FPS1000 4.1 speakers (i kno its old =P). im planning to buy new ones and the cheapest i found with the best quality within a 100$ canadian pricerange was the altec lansing 251 (99$) speakers and the logitech z-540 (59$) and the logitech z-640 (116$)... i dont really want to spend that much for the 640s, but if they are alot better than the other 2 than ill pick them up =]... i will mainly use these speakers for playing mp3z and watching movies and a little bit of gaming (but i usually use headphones for that unless the sound that comes out of the new speakers really blows me away)
was wondering which ones u would recommend me? =D

Don't know about the Altec Lansings. The Logitech Z-540 and Z-640 are very similar except the former is a 4.1 system and the latter is a 5.1 system and would be better for DVD listening. The satellites and subwoofer are basically the same, though.

I have the a set of Logitech Z-340 which is only a 2.1 system (don't have room for surround) which replaced my Cambridge Soundworks "Soundworks" (original). The Z-340's also use the same satellites and subwoofer design. I believe the original Soundworks and your FPS1000 4.1 are very similar. The Z-340's were a huge improvement in sound.

I paid $40 USD ($62 CAD) about 6 months ago. Your Z-540's for $59 CAD sound like a really good deal.

Just one last thought. My Z-340's have a headphone jack as do the Z-640's. The Z-540's do not.

Go to NewEgg.com and pick up the Z-640's. It will be $74 after shipping and you'll have them in about 3 days. I got them from NewEgg and they are great! Great sound, great price. Can't go wrong.

I'm using them with the Fortissimo III card.

Thanks, but JiN is the one looking to buy. He is also in Canada and can't purchase from Newegg.com but his price of $116 Canadian is $74.79 in US dollars so the price is about the same as yours.

His deal on the Z-540's is amazing though. $59 CAD is about $38 USD. I think they were $67 at newegg.com the last time I checked.

I was thinking about upgrading to the Z-560's until I re-arranged my room. My monitor now acts as my TV and I will be able to use my Home Theater system for gaming. I'll still use the Z-340's most of the time because they do sound great.

Do you know if the Z-560 will be revised for 5.1, similar to the Z-540 --> Z-640? Got a friend that would be interested. On the otherhand, he might just swing for the Z-680's. (I'd love to hear those).

The 680's are coming out right now, in Dallas. I have a set of the 560's right now. I just have to say...they rock. The bass is unbelievable, and the highs are sweet. And, they look pretty sweet too. Get a set if you can, Newegg has em cheap, but I don't know any Canadian stores.

Just looking at the specs of the Z-680s. I didn't realize they were related to the Z-560s. Thanks.

I like the control pod, remote control, and input options. However, the price takes the Z-680s out of the budget category which Logitech's other speakers occupy.

I think I would prefer something more basic like the Z-560 but with just the center channel added. I would also like something cheaper than the Z-680s, just a budget 5.1 system similar in design to the Z-560s. That is, if I was looking, which I am not.

Ok I must've skipped something. The last line of logitech speakers was the 540's and 560's. The next line is the 640, 680. The wattage of the 680's is just a tad over the 560's, hence an updated version. I don't have a set of 680's, but I have the older model, the 560's. So I offered my opinion on them. The only difference between the 2, is an additional center speaker, and a fancier controller. If I'm wrong, someone point me out please.

Also, he mentioned that he was thinking about getting the 560's in his previous post. Though I thought this was kinda obvious.

Sorry, you opened your previous post with, "The 680's are coming out right now, in Dallas". I thought you were recommending these.

Besides, I wasn't putting down anything, not any speakers nor anything that was said. I was trying to convey that the Z-560 are good and cheap but the Z-680 while also good they are no longer cheap, retailing at $399.95 USD.
