I am looking for recommendations on a field use preamp/mixer for 2
condenser XLR mics. It must be able to run batteries and supply phantom
power and be very mobile/rugged. Is the MixPre by Sound Devices my best
bet? I was hoping for something a little less expensive, but I am not
familiar enough with audio recording to make that judgement.

I think it is.
If you want cheaper, consider the Shure FP33. Do not consider the Shure
FP32.
Cooper may also make something, but I doubt it will be cheaper.
Rolls makes a field mixer also, but I personally would not recommend it.

Cooper indeed does (did?) make a 2 channel preamp. It is pretty
full-featured including 12v powering or with a series of 9v batteries,
T-power, M-S matrix... Thing is built like a tank, too... It was always
pretty expensive, though. Cost well over $1500 for the 2 channel box...

If you can get that and not bust your budget, then you're looking in
the right place. It's a serious field production unit that does
everything you want. Mobile, rugged, real connectors, phantom
powering, and decent battery life are a lot to ask of a basement
studio cheapie, which is why there are companies like Sound Deveices.

Street price for the FP-33 is around $1300-vs-$675 for the Mix-Pre.
Sonically the mix-pre is light years ahead of the FP-33. Get the Mix-Pre
you won't regret it.

Have a look at our Mic2496 -- it would seem to fit your need.
