Computer game for Windows 98/Me/XP--using Windows 7?

I have a computer game that says it's for Windows 98/Me/XP. I believe I used to have Windows XP a while ago. I think my dad changed it to Windows 7. After installing the game, it kicks me out when I try to play it, with no error message. When I try troubleshooting, the game throws up a window that says "Failed to initialize strings". Am I unable to play the game because I have Windows 7, or should I be looking elsewhere for the problem?

I've tried changing these settings (I've gone through each change of settings available), and it still displays the same message: "Failed to initialize strings".

Thank you for the quick advice, though!

Try right clicking on the game exe and set compatibility mode to windows xp service pack 2 in the compatibility tab and also check run this program as an administrator, click apply and ok then try to run the game again ........

Thanks--I tried this, but it still kicked me out of the game shortly after getting to the menu screen, with no error message.
