Is there an after market antenna for the Motorola V400 that has an
extendable core? Found one that was telescoping (called a "tower" ) but
didn't care for the look.

Have you looked on Ebay?

I did a quick search, and found 17 pages of different type antenna's.

Yes, my search did take me there. However, they seem to all be the same
as the original, or the telescoping (tower) type that I am not interested
in. I was looking for something like the following:

... but I see now that the design may be impossible for the V400 ... as
there isn't room for the extended antenna to seat within the phone.
