Library?

Decent orchestral sounds require many large samples, and most modules
don't have the room to store them. Though the programming on the Roland
plug in boards is great, the total sample space on a board is 64mb (I
think?), which is less than a single violin multisample on many sample
cds. That's why the sounds can be a little uninspiring.

So, I'd suggest a real sampler of some description and some orchestral
sample cds. You can get what used to be top of the range AKAIs cheaply
nowadays, and they have a big library available. Else, a computer and soft
sampler will do the job.

For a rackmount synthesizer, your best bet is a Triton rack with the
Orchestral expansion module. The samples come from the Vienna library.

of course a Gigasampler rig with any of the various orchestral sample sets
will be better, but it isn't a rackmount separate synth, which is what you
asked for.

I'd go with Kurzweil any day. The PC2R with the orchestral rom might suit
you, you should find a dealer and listen to it. Keep in mind that no sample
will fool you.
