What would you use 1 GB of memory?

What would you use 1 GB or more of RAM for? What application requires that much RAM? I can only think of processing graphics.

I have an ecs k7s5a mb, 256mb pc133, a gforce ti4200 64mb ddr. I once loaded SoFII at max specs, and the virtual memory reached almost 900Mb peak utilization. What did this mean?

Also, most games such as Mafia and Battle Field 1942 will reach 500Mb peak utilization at max specs.
