Do I need a new PSU with and extra 12v connector or some other special connector for the a socket 478 P4 MB? I sort of remember reading something about that somewhere online but now I can't find the article to check it out. Thx in advance for any and all suggestions and help.

Yes you do. ASUS make motherboards that have a socket called EZ plug where you can plug a 12V molex connector into it so that you can get power off the 12V rail without needing the special 4 pin connector, but unless you're PSU has at least a 15A rating on the 12V rail I wouldn't reccomend it.
