Problem with dial up testing

Okay so I have a friends computer I am trying to fix for them. The issue is they cannot get their dial-up working but where they are they have no cell service so they cannot contact earthlink for assistance. I live about 40 minutes away from them but my problem is I have no active telephone lines to try to connect to dial up. Is there any way to use another computer that is running high-speed internet to connect to the other computers modem and mimic a dial up connection? I have ran modem helper (it's an XP machine) and it passes but I get the error 678 message and have tried all the troubleshooting I could think of from their house. Any idea's on what I can try to test/troubleshoot the dial up modem without actually having an active phone line?

No, you cannot directly connect one modem to another for testing.
