Hey all,
As a fun side project, a friend of mine asked me to gut his old IBM Aptiva (AMD K6-2, Ali chipset) and install more memory, a new hard drive, and optimize the OS. He's going to give it to his kids for homework, internet browsing, etc.
My question relates to DMA access on the new hard drive.
I plan to install a Promise Ultra 100 PCI controller card, and if this is installed, can I enable DMA within Windows 98?
Win98 always warns you that if you check this box, that some systems won't support DMA. But if the Promise Card is installed, does this negate this problem?
I plan to use a Western Digital or Maxtor 20 GB, with an ATA100 interface speed. The Aptiva is new enough (1998) that it will accept large drives.
Any help is appreciated.
