Cat5e network cable won't work

I just purchased a belkin prepmium CAT5e networking cable and plugged it into an internet wall jack and hooked it up to my ps3 and the connection won't work. Does it have to be hooked up to a router? Is a CAT5e cable the same as ethernet? or will I need to buy a different cable?
