Hi everybody,

I just bought a used Mackie 1604 vlz (I assume this is the pro version).

I own a LynxOne card. Do I need special adaptor cables to connect the
soundcard to the mixer(xlr-trs,etc)?

If so will this in anyway lower the quality of the sound?

Can I buy them anywhere or should I get them from LynOne ?

By the way, does this card have balanced group outs or bus feeds?

Thanks for any help,
Mark

If it's the VLZ Pro then that will be its model name. The VLZ line,
without the "Pro", is the predecessor to the VLZ Pro line

That will depend on how you choose to interface the console to the card.

You can buy all sots of cable all sorts of places, but probably not from
the card manufacturer.

You have the card? You have a manual for it? What does it tell you?

The LynxONE comes with a bunch of XLR cables connected to a DB-type
connector that mates with the corresponding connector on the PCI card.

Please see http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/lynxone.htm for the details,
more specifically
http://www.ramelectronics.net/asse [...] eAudio.jpg .

But you already knew that, right? ;-)

Mackie consoles come with a fairly standard collection of jacks.

Check
http://www.mackie.com/home/showima [...] RORear.jpg

Other than the mic inputs, this is a console based on TRS jacks. One area of
exception is the Tape inputs and outputs - they are (ugh!) RCA jacks.

I can think of a number of ways to interface these two products.

For example, your usage philosophy might be computer audio interface as if
it were a tape recorder. Then those ugly RCA jacks could be your interface
of choice. You need some way to convert RCAs to XLRs.

Your usage philosophy might involve routing the main stereo outputs of the
console to the line inputs of your sound card. You might want to bring the
output of the sound card into one of the stereo or mono inputs. Then you
need some way to convert RCAs to TRSs.

Your usage might involve minimizing the use of the console for recording,
and tapping off of the insert points and using just the console mic preamps
to record. Then you need a non-standard cable or suffer the slings and
arrows of pushing a TRS plug into the insert jack part of the way.

> If so will this in anyway lower the quality of the sound?

When it comes to sound quality, the most important *hardware* is the nut
behind the console, and yes the nut who configures it. Cables tend to work
or not work with very few intermediate points. Sound quality problems with
cables usually involve no signal, the wrong signal or a signal that cuts in
or out.

That all said, some cables are a lot more durable than others. Nothing like
a fully or partially broken cable to screw up the sound.

When it comes to adaptors, I always favor cables with different jacks and
plugs at each end over in-line adaptor plug gizmos, because the gizmos tend
to provide a longer fulcrum which mechanically amplifies tugs on cables, and
thereby causes internal damage to the card or console.

> Can I buy them anywhere or should I get them from LynxOne ?

I doubt that you can find all the adaptors you need at Lynx Studio. Finding
everything you need might tax your local Guitar Center or equivalent.

> By the way, does this card have balanced group outs or bus feeds?

The LynxOne has fully balanced analog I/O. Operating levels are selected via
the provided software control panel.

Hi Hank,
This is the LynxOne soundcard that I have:
http://www.lynxstudio.com/lynxone.html

These are the cables that I can buy directly from Lynx Studio:
http://www.lynxstudio.com/cables.html

I'm pretty sure it has balanced feeds. It's a high quality soundcard.

I'm new at this so I'm kind of clueless.

I want to use my computer to do some recording.

I want to be able to plug my keyboards, electric guitar, bass, studio
monitors, modules, effects processors, microphone to the mixer and use a
software like cubase to record and monitor music that I'll create using all
these various instruments, soft synths, effects, modules, etc.

Let's see if you can figure this out yourself. I'll give you a hint to
start. The Lynx card operates at line level, not mic level.

1. What kind of connectors are on your Lynx card? - not the multi-pin
connectors on the card, the connectors on the breakout cables.

2. What kind of connectors are used for the line inputs and outputs of
your Mixer?

Do the plugs on 1 fit the jacks on 2? If not, you need adapters.

> If so will this in anyway lower the quality of the sound?

Only if they aren't wired correctly.

> Can I buy them anywhere or should I get them from LynOne ?

You can't buy them at K-Mart, but you should be able to buy them at a
well equipped music store.

You probalby should give some thought to how you're going to use the
card with your mixer. There are many ways. So you don't ask the ever
popular questions "How can I hear what I just recorded?" and "How come
I get feedback when I try to listen to the playback?" I'd suggest that
you make use of the Tape Input on your mixer. See the Mackie manual
(you can download it from the Mackie web site if you don't have it)
for hookup suggestions.

> By the way, does this card have balanced group outs or bus feeds?

The outputs are balanced. They really aren't group ous or bus feeds,
they're just plain outputs.

The breakout cables on my LynxOne are xlr (2 sets of males and females).
I haven't actually bought the mixer. It turns out that it was the older cr
version instead of the mackie vlz pro; so we mutually agreed to cancel the
transaction.

I'm planning on getting the Mackie 1202 vlz pro, because of the price and I
figure it'll do:
I already own an Arp Odyssey and I love the sound of it?
I think it sounds better than any conventional digital keyboard?
Problem is how do you record it? It's midi capability?
I also own a Kawai k5000s; the sounds are alright, but I would not say they
are as good as the Arp Odyssey.
I have not learned how to program it - though it's supposed to have alot of
potential.
I also have a Yamaha dx-7(have not learned how to program it either)?

So I don't actually have a mixer.
But it seems that the plugs from the pictures I've seen online that they are
1/4 trs?
So I'll need xlr-trs adaptors.
But someone mentioned that the tape inputs rca, if I use these then I'll
need xlr-rca adaptors.

As you can surmise from my responses that I am sort of clueness about this
whole business. However, I'm willing to learn because I have an interest in
music and experimenting with sound.

You might look into a Mackie Onyx if the budget will handle it. Better mic preamps and EQ, plus the FIreWire card option which would allow you to record up to 16 channels without a sound card.

It will be fine for that application, but you need to learn more than
anyone will have the patience to write in a newsgroup posting. Read
the manual for your mixer. It's very good. Just substitute your Lynx
card for a 2-track recorder (because Lynx cards hadn't been invented
when that manual was written).

Also, I believe there's an article on Ethan Winer's web site
http://www.ethanwiner.com that shows a straightforward hookup for a
mixer and stereo sound card that applies directly to your situation.
