If you can live with permanently locked stereo, there's really no 'new' gear
in the market that beat's the quality for anywhere approaching the price.

Well, there's the Really Nice Compressor. It's very popular with
people in this newsgroup, due primarily, I think, to an early
introduction here and good reviews from a few trusted active posters.
It does what you expect from a compressor very well. There are some
other compressors on the market (as well as "channel strip" devices
that have compressors) that are in the same price range but the reason
why you don't read much about them here is because nobody bothers to
try them out when the RNC is almost a sure bet.
The usual negatives about it are:
- Unbalanced input and output connections
- The two channels are internally linked - so you can't use it as two
mono compressors on separate channels
- Uses a wall wart for power
- Not directly rack mountable (you need a shelf)

Yeah, but you'll read about the same thing every day. That's only good
for us alzheimer's patients.
