Back when I took the exam it was when it was still adaptive (questions ranging between 20-30), passed each exam in 10 minutes. There's quite a bit of stupid questions that you just have to know. the best book is this one
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ [...] s&n=507846 It gets into everything in great details. It is fairly easy exam, but still have to study hard. Best Buy's tech service sometimes requires it and other times don't. I know of three people that failed the software part of the exam. Visit www.comptia.org for information, since they are the ones giving the exam. I don't know much about the new one that their administrating. (took it last year) If you have any questions, you could email me at howard11528(AT)yahoo(dot)com

Most A+ courses today are history lessons, its not even really required to get yourself a job at your local computer building and repairing shop, because the guy that owns the shop is probably going to teach you, through one of his employees how he wants you to do things any way.
You probably already know more than some of them, you just don't know it yet, keeping current with new technology from the various technology websites, will keep you miles ahead of the average computer builder working in a store that does one thing all day everyday, with not the newest technological parts on the market, but the time tested durable solid and proven parts, are what they're using to construct their out the door computers.
If you go into your local computer builders and ask enough questions that you already know the answers to, you'll be surprised at what you discover.
I reccommend Bigelow's Troubleshooting, Maintaining & Repairing PCs 5th Edition, this book will get you well on the way, to your goals.
I agree that A+ certification is basically useless. HOWEVER, unlike some other certifications in which you have to get recertified, an A+ certification is forever. People get certified back in windows 3.1 and their A+ certification still remains. If you have the A+ and Network+ certification, it will be subsitituted for one of the exams for the MCSA (microsoft certified systems administrator) Also it shows you how certifications works. It may not be much use, but the experience is invaluable when your taking harder certification exams. I would still take it again if I could turn back time.
