My aging monitor (NEC multisync 75) has a max refresh rate of 60. I assume this means how many FPS it can actually display. If I set thie higher in-game, is there actually a quality difference or am I limited by the hardware?

I ask because I'd rather set my graphics to higher resolutions than waste my card power running refresh rates that don't change anything.

Thanks all

i have a 5 years old sony 17" limited to the same refresh rate u says, the 60 hz barrier. On the contrary my computer is only 9 months old ... p4 2.530ghz 1GB ram ddr 333, 160 ata hd, AND (this is the answer for you) AN ATI RADEON 9700 PRO 128 MB

i have experienced what does ocurre when this wild graphic card kicks my monitors ass over the 60 fps barrier and the answer is just:

"DISPLAY SCAN OUT"
message over a black screen
then you have to restart system.

exceding the fps limit for your monitor does not gives poor image quality it simply fails to render image and force you to restart your system.
