Well, thats why I bought a DVD for my computer as well, to plug into my TV, and then a surround sound speaker-set. I've got an LG 16x, and I can tell you that I've built other computers with MSI and Panasonic DVD-ROMs and there's not much of a difference... its kind of a standard thing - like floppy drives. As for the speed of the drive, its just seek time, but obviously a 16x will work "better" than a 10x.. and buffer size is only important if you've got an older system... Anything upwards of 500Mhz is fine..
Oh, and like I said, brands don't matter.. Go with an LG - they're low cost and they're reliable.
Ahhh! It's 2003 and wait, whats this!? My computer didn't blow up! ... Well damn, there goes my new Athlon @ 333FSB and my inssurance claim... heheheh
Edited by error_911 on 01/04/03 11:38 PM.

LiteOn are quite inexpensive and good too. If you search old posts from this forum as well as read review from other sites (such as the following sites), then you'll know what I mean.
