Print through router to wired printer?

Hi. I have a Canon i9900 printer wired to an XP desktop. I bought a new windows 7 laptop that connects to the internet through my wireless router. How do I set up the laptop to print through the router?

Is the printer a wired only printer ?
Does the router have a USB port ?
If you set the printer up as a network printer and you have to leave it connected to the computer with XP then you will only be able to print to it while the desktop is on.
You will have to set up a home network and include the laptop in this network and then have the printer set as a network printer.

As said above, this will only work when the computer with the printer attached is left on.
