Since I got my battery backup, (uninterruptable power supply) tonight was the first night she really got to show off what she could do, had really serious lightning come up suddenly, and the power was off and on real fast, the UPS did its job to the max, my computer didn't miss a beat.

If you don't have one you really should consider putting it on your lists of future buys, especially for anyone running a RAID0 array, its definitely worth every penny.

We both asked him but haven't gotten an answer. Maybe more people should ask.

He's either not around, or he's going around rechecking what a Raid0 array is to find an explaination.

If the power goes out, it's a big risk on backup arrays.

Sorry guys we had some bad storms last night and my ISP went down, a striped array especially with the new drives with 8mb cache being doubled in a striped RAID0 array to 16mb, can contain quite a bit of data that could be lost if the power was completely and suddenly stopped, while you were say in the middle of doing some data transfers.

XP if you haven't disabled its feature, writes some important data to the cache itself, enabling fast access and a faster shutdown, its not wise to just pull the power on a single HDD, much less a striped RAID array.

It doesn't really matter that much with a mirrored array because it backs itself up, but data loss on a striped array could result in having to completely reload the OP/SYS, it really depends on what the HDDs doing at the time of the power loss.

But you guys can prove me wrong if you want just start doing some critical data apps and snatch your power cord out of the wall, and report back how things went.

Morning RC! Hows things today? Do you know how Mikes getting along? I asked him in a post the other day how his healing was progressing, he either didn't answer or I may have missed it? He should be doing quite well by now, unless he's had some complications. Do you know anything?

I'm doing fine a frog hair this morning myself, hope you are as well!!

IronMike is healing, but slow. He was hurt pretty bad. Last I heard, he's got a cane now instead of crutches. He must not be as pent up lately, he hasn't been on much..

Ryan - I can't believe some of these peeps are debating the value of a ups/back-up unit. I thought this was settled geek truth ...

Agreed. I have an APC Back-UPS 650VA, has saved me tons of times, thank god. I got about 10-15 minutes of back-up juice on it each time, which is excellent for modern PCs. IIRC 650VA is about 400W, right?

Hi Jake, Hope all is well with you, this place doesn't seem to be happy unless they're argueing about something, you can't have an intelligent conversation with the majority of them, without being called some kind of name simply because you had a difference of opinion, I don't respond well to that kind of crap, so from that point the intelligent conversation is out the window.

Some things are just no brainers to me and I had put off getting a UPS for a long time because of the price of them and because I wanted one with a high VA, I got an 1100VA 600W it can run 2 average computers, but I only have it set up on mine, if I truly had know its capabilities I wouldn't have waited so long to get one.

But with the road construction going on down from my house, with accidently cutting power lines becoming a regular thing, and the Thunder storms we've had lately I went ahead and got one, and at this point after last night, I don't regret it. One thing I'm really impressed with is the guaranteed replacement of any damaged hardware up to $150,000.00, if the unit I bought fails to protect my computer. Sweeeeet! That should cover a replacement don't you think?

You know, I did the same thing. A yr ago - a direct lightening strike on my house fried my computer, 2 TV's and 4 wired phones (plus misc. bulbs, etc). The lightening struck the building right at the cable box. Needless to say, it fried everything even close to a coaxial cable - cable modem, motherboard, power supply, 2 of the 3 memory sticks - lucky for me that I had homeowners ins - $100 deductible ... a sneaky way of getting a cheap upgrade. Plus my neighborhood has constant power surges - we are forever blowing blubs and having outages.

So, like you, I bought an APC XS1000 (600W) unit - designed for servers - but got it on a Comp-USA clearance for $75.00 (half off). It has about 30 full minute run time during power outages ... and the same $150,000 warranty.

I've had the thing kick in dozens of times in the last year without a hick-up. Wouldn't think of working without one now.

Oh yea, I live in the lightening capital of the US.

My brother bought like 5 battery backups, but I think all of them have had their batteries gone bad. The things just continuously beep when a computer is plugged into them.

Like anything with batteries - you need to replace the batteries as recommended by the manufacturer. My unit has like a 3 yr battery they say - but if I need a new battery, hell, I'll get it. This thing is worth its weight in gold.

Couldn't agree more. UPS' here are often disregarded, but in the times we get power outages, it becomes clear why we bought one or need one soon.

In Lebanon I believe every household with a comp has one. They pretty much are included on a list of a computer someone is going to buy, it's almost standard. Over there power outages are a routine every day.

These things are more than just a power back-up, they are the best power conditioners and surge suppressors available. My unit has a 2 yr warranty - so if I have a battery problem later - I look at it like its an approx. $38.00/yr insurance policy ... or less - it's worth that to me.

Very true. I once had my RAM corrupted with a power outage, on my old P2 350MMX system. Every time I start Windows 98SE it tells me it has a registry corruption (obviously not), I had to restart and let it restore to an earlier date letting it be fooled into thinking it was fixed. Power surges or instant blackouts can easily destroy equipment. Just think, that split second of power outage can destroy all your computer. Better have an investment against that split second that would protect your 2000$ PC.

Seems like many here disregard that reality and ignore what we're trying to say.

Absolutely I totally agree, after the initial investment the battery is a small price to pay for the insurance, and they do, do a lot more than just back up, lightning protection, surge protection, brownouts, power failure assisted by software normal shutdown, built in voltage regulator to monitor constant voltage feed, and protects phone line or ethernet line.

I don't even know how many little power surge protection strips I've bought that the phone protection feature didn't work on, but the ethernet protector definitely works on this APC.
