half the ram

When I put in 512 mb Ram, the bios only shows 256mb.
same with 256 mb Ram.
Any idea how it comes that only half of the ram is accessible?
Also pc hangs very often !

Did you check if you Motherboard support 512 MB RAM?

Usually caused by a density issue, read the FAQ. I suggest getting your memory from Crucial using their memory selector to avoid this problem in the future.
