Phew... no Conservatives, that's all I hoped for.
Canadians, opinions?
I'd have to say the B.Q. made an impressive showing with 56 seats. Quebecers are seriously voicing their desire to seperate more than ever, and I only wonder why last year's provincial elections failed, if they now have almost 75% of the province for sovereignity.
I'm just glad we're gonna continue having a progressive government. Although I just hope pot remains constrained to people's houses maximum.

Fvkcing damn separatists always whining about how shitty it is to be Canadian. I bet the fvkcers wouldn't complain to much if we made afew of them swim out to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon in November.

Heheh, over here it's getting harder and harder to say we're living in Quebec INSIDE Canada, honestly. I'm against the seperation but the way I hear it so much here and the way Quebec is pushed through everywhere, it really doesn't sound like it's a CANADIAN province, at all, anymore. Even my College has the Quebec flag in front.
I'll have to ask one of my best friends, if he really believed voting for the B.Q. was because he thought they would win. It just gets twisted sometimes.
Let's agree on something: It ain't Harper's leadership in place, and that's a good day anyday.

It's one thing not to support gay marriage, but to call it a scandal when it once happened here? AND put it besides child porn in scandals we should avoid? Wow.
I personally hoped to see the NDP get more, as they seemed interesting.
In the overall scheme of things, my real worry is just how the new govt will react to pot laws. They wanna decriminalize it, fine. Just don't legalize it publically later. Ugghhh, I can't imagine entering a restaurant and smelling that piece of crap.

Are Canadian liberals like American liberals or European liberals?
<i><font color=red>Edited by Scamtron on 10/11/01 09:58 PM
Ya know, I'm tempted to say they're not like American liberals. At least, I don't get that vibe. American liberals from all I've heard, are known especially for their anti-war sentiments.
Liberals in Canada, despite all they've done, are in general people with progressist views, as in, likely to give more rights to minorities. True however, Conservatives are more right winged. But Canada functions very well with its more leftist view than the US, so even if the Liberals here are more leftist, it doesn't really hurt us in the end.
Either way, I said I'd support any govt other than Conservatives, so even if the Liberals aren't the best thing in the world, they're still better than that anti-bilingual bastard who put gay marriage beside child porn as the kind of scandal we don't want to happen again.
I was really wishing to see what an Neo Democrat (NDP) govt. would be like, but it won't happen anytime soon.
BTW what are European liberals like?

They don't really exist. It is still mostly country based, not on a EU scale, although they are organised in european factions in the european parliament.
In the Netherlands the liberals are a right wing party, to the right of the christian democratic faction (which is right-center). In the european parliament, the dutch liberal party is part of the european liberal faction which is a center party and to the left of the european christian conservative faction. The dutch christian democratic party is part of the european christian conservative faction.
Does this make any sense to you?

heh
it's not easy to understand for me, let alone for people from other continents.
The european parliament is organized in factions, these factions represent certain values (liberal, christian, socialist). In the dutch context these values are coupled to a political spectrum from right to left (which has the same meaning as in the US). The Liberal party in the netherlands has evolved to a right wing party (which has nothing to do with being liberal, which in the european definition is the value of personal freedom), you can be either center or right and be a (european) liberal (being left is rather difficult because left is equated with socialism, which is about the value of solidarity and collectivism, as opposed to personal freedom).
In the European parliament the liberals are center, the christian democrats are conservative (right). So in the european context the dutch liberal party is represented in the center, while in the dutch parliament they are representing the political right. And the other way around for the christian democrats. The left is consistent in national and european context (socialist, like Tony Blair's labour party for example
).

Personnally I voted for NDP. I guess I was kind of rooting for Harper because he said he would help out the west more but I feared what he really might have in mind for Canada. As for Quebec if u guys wanna leave please do. Just go back to France. We in the west get treated worse than u cry baby Quebecers. Honestly you really think seperation is a good idea. At least if Alberta seperated they have there oil, what does Quebec have?
Actually Quebec's anger has been stemming from the last decade and the one before with how they refused to just ADMIT they were distinct, without any seperation treaty in mind. That fuelled a lot of anger in Quebecers, who, despite what you may say or disagree with, ARE much more distinct from the rest of Canada. I'd look at an Albertan and an Ontarian and would see similar culture and language, but I certainly couldn't compare either to a Quebecer. I know that because I live here. And where do you get off I am for seperation?

Around me in Hull I hear very little pro-seperation people. Check the election results, southern Quebec is much more Liberal. At least, over here, the Liberals took it. Northern Quebec is much more sensitive though, because of the roots and such, and because they're far from the Ontario border. Here 5 minutes and you reach Ottawa, a completely different architecture of buildings, and a culture vastly different.
So for Southern Quebec it's all fine if you live here, as nationalism doesn't take such a huge part in our lives. I'd say 95% of the people I know including my friends, are against seperation.
And as always, when you speak louder, people tend to think there is more than there actually is. The majority of my friends here actually speak with a pretty good American accent.
