here's my situation. I have dsl modem/roouter located in a room on one corner of the house. I need to boost the wifi signal so that my wifi thermostat at the far other end of the house can see it. I want to install a router in the closet located in the center of the house basically as an access point to wifi. so I can be connected in all rooms with excellent signal strength. How do I do this? Do i need to connect the 2 with cat 5 cable?

If the router you plan on using has NO repeater mode then you will need to use a cable. If on the other hand you do not have a router for this setup and you plan on buying one, then be sure to find one that does have a repeater mode.

A repeater is like an Access Point but does not need the cable connection, it simply connects via Wifi and transmits the signal further.
An Access Point does need a cable connection to a router or switch to receive the signal.
