Maxtor & Giga-byte mb

I have a Gigabyte ga-7vaxp mobo,Athlon2100+,256mb2100SDRAM, with a 10 gb maxtor 51024U2 HD. The BIOS only reports the HD as a PIO4 mode HD but i know that it is at least ATA66/UDMA4. This is a 3 month old mobo, and any other drive i put into it only comes up as a PIO4 also.
Do you think this is a mobo prob, or BIOS, or whatever.
ATA100 cables, and the machine is set up properly(i believe).
Any help would be appreciated, seeing as this was a gift, from my Canadian b-in -law, I would need a supplier in NC to send it back to if it were defective.

Check in the device manager in Windows (have you gotten that far?).

Thanks for your input, this afternoon I got really fed up and reflashed the BIOS 3 times, with another program and voila, it WORKED...everything is fine for now. thanks again
