Ever wanted the sound of a Space Echo but with the versatility of a decent
plug-in? I've always thought modeling analog delay with advanced imaging
features would be a good seller, but it never came out. So it finally came
time where a track was just begging for analog delay on the snare, and I
figured I'd take a shot at hacking something together, turns out it's easier
than I thought.
Using a stereo aux channel for the effect, put a tube amp modeler (I'm using
Amplitube) before the delay plug (ie Waves Supertap).
Here's a clip to check out:

This is just Amplitube in front of the delay on the snare, with the feedback
within the plug itself, so it doesn't progressively degrade, but it still
gets the job done. A little automation sends the feedback taps floating off
to either side for a mint jungle effect.
If you want the taps to progressively degrade like the real deal, you've got
to set up a second stereo aux strip to better control the feedback into the
modeled delay channel and maintain the stereo imaging of the delay, or have
the modeler in its own aux channel. In this case it's a quick job and it
works so well as is, so I didn't bother.
And it's disgusting how much the mp3 trashes the flangered overheads even at
256kbps... barf!
I've seen a half-dozen or more plugins that do this exact thing. When was
the last time you looked around?
