I have done some research online and reading past Google articles but some
questions remain, if anyone can help out...

1.) Mic pre quality? Assume a baseline of the XDR pre's in a Mackie board.

2.) Aux Send routing. The unit has 8 Aux Sends but only 4 analog output
jacks, other than the Mains and Control Room outputs. How would you get 8
discrete Aux Send signals out 4 jacks to something that has 8 inputs such as
an 8 input headphone distribution amp (say you were using the 8 Aux Sends
for the onstage in-ear monitor mixes of the 8 musicians)? I am guessing
left/right Aux Send panning in the mixer and then a L/R splitter plugged
into each of the 4 Omni outputs, but not sure.

3.) Onboard effects quality? Assume a baseline of the built-in effects of a
Tascam DM24.

4.) Are the channel Insert jacks pre- or post-A/D conversion? I am assuming
pre but I wanted to verify. We use the Insert jacks as direct outs to feed
the inputs of a series of Delta 1010's and I don't want to add another A/D
conversion to the signal chain if it can be helped.

5.) Why would I spend $800 more for this unit than I would for a DM24? One
answer for me is that the 01V96 has 8 Aux Sends vs. the Tascam's 6. Outside
of that, they seem very similar feature-wise. Am I just paying markup for
the Yamaha name here?

TIA,

-Ben

I don't think there is such a price differential between the DM24 and the
01V96. The street price on the Tascam is about $1800, about $1900-2000 for
the Yamaha.

the biggest difference between the two mixers is that the tascam is a
what-you-see deal whereas the yamaha can be upgraded a large number of
ways. there are no discrete outpust in the model other than the auxs of
course, but you can install d/a cards that run up to 8 output channels.
this functions sort of like a matrix out feature, meant more for
recording than anything else. the tascam is also easier to use and
seemingly more durable. as for dfx, the yamaha's are better, hands
down. the 8 aux channels in the yamaha are mono that can be paired into
4 stereo sends. i dont know how that works on the tascam. my opinion,
tascam is mor suited to what you're looking for, but you should
definately call both of them. they will send you specs. you can also
download the manuels from their sites in order to check the insert
location in the datastream. i think the yamaha is pre a/d conv.
