Can't read my documents from USB

the documents i'm trying to view was typed in my last computer using microsoft word. i saved them to an usb, but when i tryied viewing it on my new computer using wordpad all i got was numbers and symbols. so is this because they are different programs or what the hell? i'll have to stop by my local library i suppose. thanks in advance fellows.

You do not have microsoft word installed in the new computer.
If you want to read the documents, you need to install the application (microsoft office).
