Has anyone tried this package out on a spare box?

It's based on the Knoppix style Debian LiveCDs, which let you boot
from them without installing to the HD. Knoppix and Morphix both do a
really good job of coping with hardware, even in my laptop (I think
they nabbed the hardware detection from RedHat or Mandrake).

Anyway, it looks like it has promise (and it does allow for installing
to the hard drive, should you coose to).

Not yet. I think it's put together by the Rosegarden peeps.
If you want something along the same lines, but free and somewhat more
Slackware based, try m-dist. It probably won't be as nice, or up to date,
but should give you some idea.

I'm a big Linux fan, and have been using it for audio for some years now,
but I have to admit that configuring a decent Linux audio system is just
too damm hard for anyone without lots of experience with Linux.
A single mistake can often turn what should be a powerful audio
workstation into a glitchy unreliable mess.

It's a shame as there are so many useful applications and tools that would
benefit those on this group.

Live CDs like this solve half of the problem, namely the install and
setup, but don't cover the other half.. That is that you can
submit a bug or feature request to many of the projects and actually
expect a fix fairly quick. I don't see a method of getting free updates so
you can burn a new CD with the often essential fixes. The world of Linux
audio is still new, and changes very fast, so having a fixed format is a
little limiting. Anyway, good luck to them.

On another note, it would be great if someone who knew about such things
would start a rec.audio.pro.linux group, where I would be happy to share
some hard won experience with those having problems with Linux audio in
the studio.
