V551 hands free earbud does not work

I have a hands free wired earbud that was sold to me as compatible with the
V551. I can hear fine through it but cannot talk through it and be heard.
Initially i thought it was the earbud but it works fine on the LG6100. Then
I thought my phone had a problem but tried it on my husband's V551 and the
same thing is true--I can hear through it but cannot be heard at the other
end. anyone know about this? My bluetooth wireless hands free works fine,
but sometimes I like an earbud or the battery runs out of the bluetooth and
I want a back up.
