Hi guys,
I've got a rather old and crappy PC with these specs:
AMD athlon 1GHz
AMD KG7 RAID mobo
2 Maxtor 20GB IDE HDD in Raid 0 config with Highpt raid controller
Inno3d Geforce2 GTS graphics card
AMD approved 300W PSU
Audigy Soudcard
Kingston DDR266Mhz DDRSDRAM at CLS 2.5

I know this PC's crappy, but that's all I have. Recently, I've found my PC to be very unstable. I keep hanging for no apparent reasons, even if I just leave it there. It's been running alright for more than a year.

In addition, everytime I started the PC, the PC would produce long, continuous beeps, and no display on the monitor. THe HDD busy light keeps going on. I didn't OC the CPU. Checked the system temp, 35 deg at normal operations. The PC would miraculously stop the beeps and come back to life after restarting for about 10 mins. I reset the BIOS settings with the jumper, ran everything at fail-safe mode, still the prob persisted. The PSU had not given me any probs before also.

I reformatted the HDD, reinstalled my Win 98 SE, updated and scanned with Norton Antivirus and norton disk doctor and scandisk, and found no problems. I did the BIOS memory check during POST, no probs. Memcheck would hang halfway through though.

So, what do you guys think? As I'm rather cash-strapped, I would hate replacing a component and finding it still problemsome. I suspected a memory problem, but what would you gurus think?

There are many possibilities to the cause of problem, bad RAM, graphics card, PSU, etc. However, it's worth a try to re-seat components to ensure they are in correctly. If necessary take all components out except for the RAM, CPU and graphics card, then try the system.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add, my USB NIC has got this newfound hobby of turning itself off whenever it's bored. =X any ideas?

Something like that happened to me. Acutally, almost, if not, the same thing happened. People kept telling me it was the motherboard, ram, processor, video card, or even power supply. I didn't have the time to figure it out, so i went and bought a new motherboard, processor, and power supply. It works fine now (though the bios doesnt read the amount of ram correctly). I'll suggest its one of those things.

Sounds like a power supply. But do it at no risk. Go to comp USA and buy one. If it doesn't help then take it back. People return things all the time cause its not what they needed.

I dunno, Compusa always tries to screw you with the return policy. I returned an unopened motherboard and they insisted i opened it. I won though... so its all good :D
