problems loading game (Sacrifice sound dll)

I am running an older machine p3 550 running XP and attempting to run a
game from 2001. the game seems to install fine, but won't run. It says
it "can't setup sound dll" . I have googled this error and I haven't
found much. What I have found says I need to "override the dll". What
does this mean and how do I do it? I have the game sucessfully
installed on a different windows XP machine and it workd just fine? Is
this a hardware problem, a system config problem? I am using a real
version of the game bought at an electroinics store.
