If your computer has two ethernet ports then you can connect the crossover cable to one of then if your using the other one for a connection to the internet.

You will also need to make your computer into a router using a feature called internet connection sharing (ICS) which microsoft has great examples of how to setup on their site. This works but tends to be unstable at times since your main computer may be running other programs. I would use a $25 router if that is a option before I messed with ICS.
