All of a sudden there's a mic from this company called WM70 for sale on
eBay. Is that a mistake because it certainly looks like a UM70S or is there
really such a thing out there.

From the photos... I think it's just a scratch on the "U" that makes it look
a bit like a "W"...

That's what I thought too but apparently it's black on the backside which
mine isn't. I have wanted one more for quite a while so this may be it,
dependeing on his reserve. The "buy it now" is more expensive than a new one
so I´m suspecting that he is expecting more than he can possibly get.

I just realised that UM70 is the predecessor of the UMT70S, does anybody
know what the difference is. I mailed Gefell but they haven´t responded yet.

I think the earlier UM70 has a transformer, the "s" does not. The
earlier mics sometimes had the black half like that, or it's also
possible that the screen on the back was replaced at some point.
Search ebay.de for Gefell mics and you will see a lot of variations of
this model.

That is correct. The UM70 is comprised of two parts:
The MV692 P48 "body" or preamp or impedence converter, with a
transformer.
The UN70 multipattern capsule/head assembly.
The newer UMT70S is the tranformerless descendent. I have a pair,
which I really like, but I have never had the chance to compare them to
the transformer version.
I'm glad to see MG finally getting some attention in the US. They make
a great set of products, have a valid claim to Neumann lineage, and are
still innovating. The small diaphragm M300's are great acoustic guitar
mics.
the buy it now price is high on that mic IMHO. If anyone's interested, I have
a pair of MT71-1s, cardoids, black, wooden boxes.
I'd sell $1200 pair. the last time I looked I think they listed for something
like $1250 each.Too many mics, not enough time.....
feel free to email me off group at gtrpaul@aol.com
I'm after a second hand UMT70S and they are almost impossible to get. I
already have one but these mics are outstanding which probably is also why
they are never resold.

I got mine on ebay for around $700. Check out www.ebay.de (German
ebay) there are plenty of them at fair prices, athough the dollar is
now so weak (thanks GW) that it's not the deal it once was.

Plenty, there was one 3 months ago. I live 150 kilometres from Germany so I
follow German eBay very carefully, no UMT70S for a while I'm sure.
