How to format hdd in dos mode

Hello,
This is the error I get on my computer, what should I do? I've already done a backup to an external Hard Drive.
WINDOWS DETECTED A HARD DISK PROBLEM
Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer
manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.
> Start the backup process
> Ask me again later
Which disk is failing?
The following hard disks are reporting failure:
Disk name: ST3500418AS ATA Device

More about format mode
  1. That's an older drive from the 7200.12 generation. It's got about five years on it. It might just be giving up the ghost.

You can try using Seatools and run diagnostics on the drive to see whether it is in fact failing.
