i need help with understanding memory. my uncle mentioned that the amount of memory that you system can use is directly related to something else. he understands computers way better than i do, and i don't see him that often. anyways, how do i select memory, and how do i make sure that the amount and type of memory will be compatitable with my os, and mobo? i currently have 512 ddr with agigabyte ga7dxr mobo and me. i am going to make a new system and want to avoid the same mistakes and system instability with my last one.

as long as you make sure to get a well respected mobo and memory you should be okay as far as compatibility. But, if you really wanna make sure, most RAM makers will compatibility tables use with their ram. Good luck!

If your not looking for the highest performance ram out there (Mainly for overclocking). Go to Crucial's website and use thier ramfinder utility for whatever motherboard your using.

If you want to get around stability issues;
1.) Don't use a cheap motherboard
2.) Don't use generic memory
3.) Don't use a cheap power supply

I'm New to this also.
From what I've seen:

PC3500 = 433MHz DDR = 216.66MHz Memory Bus
PC3200 = 400MHz DDR = 200.00MHz Memory Bus
PC2700 = 333MHz DDR = 166.66MHz Memory Bus
PC2400 = 300MHz DDR = 150.00MHz Memory Bus
PC2100 = 266MHz DDR = 133.33MHz Memory Bus
PC1600 = 200MHz DDR = 100.00MHz Memory Bus

Best bet is to find SPEC sheet for your mobo,
& see if it has a MEM table.

Good Luck!
