Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me, I currently own 2 HDDs from IBM.

1)40GB IBM Deskstar 120GXP ATA100
2)123.5GB IBM Deskstar 180GXP ATA100

I have just ordered 2 new drives from Western Digital, these will either replace my current ones or act as a standbye incase my current ones die, the 2 drives I have ordered are.

1)Western Digital - Caviar 7200RPM 40Gb Special Edition 8MB WD400JB
2)Western Digital - Caviar 7200RPM 120Gb Special Edition 8MB WD1200JB

Can anyone tell me what drives are better, the IBM or the Western Digital, and what makes them better?. I have been looking at benchmarks on this site and if I have been reading them correctly the IBM drives have faster read/write and access times.

Thanks for any help
Adam

Well i personally prefer WD as they are more reliable... IBM shot themselves in the foot with the problems the 60 and 75gxp's had.

and i think the JB's are faster due to their 8mb cache... at least for the 120GXP... seek times arnt everything.

check out the benchmarks at http://www.storagereview.com

My 60GB WD recently died and I'll have to mail mine back for a replacement. Still, I hear a lot of bad things about IBM.

They've BOTH had bad histories. It depends on the line of hd you buy. WD's new 8mb line seems to work reliably, as does IBM 120gxp and up. If there is nothing wrong with the hard drive then don't replace it.

The WD are faster and they have a 3 year warranty. Definitely use them.

I think IBM drives are the most unreliable drives I've ever owned so I can't say anything good about them. They have a lot of work to do before I have faith in them again.

if you already ordered them, i would just use the 120GB IBM and the 120GB WDJB

I've never owned an IBM drive but I purchased a WD SE 80gb hd this summer and love it. It's so much faster than any other drive I've ever owned and I haven't had any issues with it.
